Some people prefer to listen to it on the road, while others, on the contrary, remain faithful to CD media and listen to their favorite compositions exclusively at home on a high-quality speaker system. Akira Yamaoka’s compositions and sketches incredibly subtly convey the mood of what is happening on the screen, the characters’ personalities, and even the character of the city itself. Akira himself conveys his thoughts through music so correctly and skillfully that it is simply impossible to imagine any other sound accompaniment in a particular place (and personally, I am a fan of “playing” with the arrangements of interesting compositions). This idea is confirmed by circumstances – with Yamaoka’s departure from the foggy town, the original atmosphere of the series also left. No, she didn’t disappear completely, she just became completely different. Of course, it’s not only the OST that creates a tense atmosphere; rather, it sets a certain tone for it, helping to evoke the necessary emotions in the player. But it’s precisely for these very emotions that we play video games, isn’t it??
You may ask, what about games where the soundtrack plays exclusively in the background and does not affect any atmosphere?? Various races, sports simulators and fighting games – yes, for such games, as a rule, no specially composed OST is provided. Here the developers have another task (and it is no easier) – they need to collect famous compositions by various artists into a pack. Yes, so that they fit the gameplay of a particular game like a glove, and at the same time each player could find a couple of tracks to his taste. This is very important, remember, at least, that unforgettable drive of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II or the unforgettable Underground. How many potential hits are there, how many groups have received unexpected success in their musical careers thanks to these games?. Personally, I still have a bunch of favorite compositions from the good old NFS lying around in my player. Now remember the series in the last five years and name at least 5 tracks that really stuck with you. It’s not that simple, is it? And all the drive, it seems, went somewhere following the powerful riffs of Static-X and the cool beats of hip-hop artists (even I, not a fan of this style of music, had great pleasure in cutting through the night streets to the cheerful recitative).
I’m generally silent about music games like Guitar Hero – they generally play directly on our feelings of nostalgia and the hidden desire of every person to find himself on the big stage and give the heat to a huge stadium.
