I’ll start the blog with a little coming out. The author is a real coward. Due to my excessive impressionability, I have always avoided horror films and horror games. Actually, I still adhere to this policy now, with one small exception – I love be afraid with your friends! It’s easier to do a lot of things in a group, and scary games are on this list. Friendly support always helps you not to give in to any creepiness that comes your way, but it’s very funny to see (more often than not listen to) how a friend gets scared of the next screamer. Until the moment when this screamer overtakes you, of course – then you will switch roles.
Over the past six months, we (your humble servant and her intrepid group of three) have tried a number of projects that claim to scare us. Spoiler: not all of them succeeded. I’ll say right away that when making a purchase of this kind, there is an extremely high probability that it will be a game “for the evening.”. Therefore, we prefer to be scared at a discount if the project itself does not cost as much as a cup of coffee.
Purpose of this blog: suggest a couple of good creepy fun for a memorable evening with friends. Well, maybe my notes will encourage doubting players to try this genre with the help of trusty friends. I’ll give each title a little commentary about my gaming experience and rate it with a gorgeous orange insurance meter.
1. Phasmophobia
Phasmophobia
Game time: 48 hours.
In the beginning there was Phasma. It was with the once sensational game authored by Kinetic Games that we began our spooky journey. And contrary to the name of the game, we did not develop a phobia, but rather, on the contrary, we got a taste for it!
Due to the popularity of the title, there is no need to talk for a long time about the gameplay component. We are going to another not-at-all-creepy place (house, farm or prison, etc.).d.) and, trying not to lose face, using ghost-hunting tools we try to guess what type of ghost makes our heart beat faster. The concept hit the spot, and Phasmophobia became real genre-forming a project no worse than souls games. Ghosts may become demons, tools and locations may change, but the essence will still be the same. Below we will look at some of its clones.
Now let’s return to Phasma herself. Here’s how the developers themselves describe their successful creation on Steam:
Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Paranormal activity is on the rise and it’s up to you and your team to use all the ghost-hunting equipment at your disposal in order to gather as much evidence as you can

Well, with “psychological” they still turned down. After all, Phasma is not about the atmosphere. For the first half hour or hour, at most evening (provided that you know almost nothing about the game) you will be scared. Then, as often happens, when you understand exactly how the game can scare you, you will be at most uncomfortable with a random loud sound or an unexpectedly started hunt (the stage of aggressive pursuit by a ghost). As the difficulty increases, it becomes more difficult to identify the ghost and escape from the bogeyman, but not worse.
Large and scary maps help to refresh your senses: school, prison, mental hospital. But there is one nuance. It may be scarier to be there than in another cottage, but the gameplay itself becomes unbearably stuffy. It’s not always easy to find your way around a huge building in the dark, every now and then the lights turn off, and while you go to turn them on, your sanity settles, and then the ghost, rubbing its cold palms, begins a win-win hunt for you, and you die without even finding the right room. Scary? May be. It’s stuffy? Definitely.
However, the ghost fever has gripped us for a long time. In a dozen or two evenings, having mastered all the tools and studied all the cards offered at that time, now we just sometimes go through a case or two during events or major updates. So, we can conclude that in general there is replay value.
What else, in my opinion, is very important for this type of game is accessibility in mastering the gameplay part. For example, how to use a particular tool? Phasma is not a very friendly game in this regard. To successfully identify a ghost, we all watched video guides and wikis.
A special plus for the high interactivity of the lobby! It’s not boring to wait for slow comrades. If you want to torture Jenga, if you want to leave the ball in the hoop.
Definitely worth getting acquainted with as the ancestor of a number of similar games I advise.
2. Content Warning
Content Warning
Game time: 3 hours.
A not-so-well-known co-op horror game with an interesting idea. The essence of the game is this: you are novice bloggers, and to attract an audience you have not come up with anything better than showing them creepy content. Wait a minute… I’ve already seen this somewhere.
Let’s get back to the game. What are the developers saying about the game this time??
Film creepy things with your friends and upload videos of them to SpöökTube to become famous! Be careful, solo outings are not recommended!
Wilnyl, Philip, thePetHen, Skog, Zorro
Neither add nor subtract. Great description!
Don’t let these cute divers with hand-painted (special like) faces fool you! Although, they won’t do anything bad, but what surrounds them strives to quickly send them into spectate mode in the most interesting place. Each race is a trip to some creepy and at the same time large-scale place in which we, which is unusual for horror (although this is the essence of global go), are looking for our own adventures. The game does not require any preparation, everything is intuitive. Go shoot it, then upload it.
In fact, we have a kind of paradox. Usually in horror films, if they don’t run away from sources of horror and danger, then at least they turn away. Here we need to FILM everything that seems scary to us (including the death of comrades). For filming, you can buy a lot of different film equipment (camera-motor clapperboard, mounted directional microphone, boombox (!) and t.d.) to increase the entertainment and quality of that same content. The camera itself has a limited charge and you won’t be able to shoot everything, you need to choose the softest one. Plus the camera records all the sound. At the end of your spooky procession, you can watch all the captured content together and at the same time see how the SpöökTube community rated it. This is where the laughter begins: everyone becomes very funny from the moments where it was very scary, and the goal of the game seems to come into a loop. The hub location is quite large and interesting to explore, but in the long run it will be boring.
The monsters themselves are not that original. Giant spiders, canvas suckers, creepy robots. Nothing memorable, although it would seem that we are looking at them twice – while we are filming and while we are watching what was filmed.
And then you can feel that it smells painful.. Lethal company! Spacesuits, races, farming currencies for a limited period of time. And you’ll be right. But there’s no replay value and vibe from Flying here. For us the game ran its course in 3 hours. Races were divided into “long and empty” and “short and deadly”. And it seems there is something to farm there, something that can be achieved. But the desire to return there never arose. It seems that we spent more time at the machine for changing faces than we ended up being afraid/having fun on forays.
